The Crooked River tailwater is fishing great with pristine 56°F water – a cold-water refuge when August heat stresses other rivers. Zebra Midges and Pheasant Tail Nymphs are the ticket for selective redband rainbows and browns, with evening PMD spinners and BWO afternoons providing consistent dry fly windows throughout the day.

The Crooked River tailwater is a summer oasis right now — 55.6°F water temperature, crystal-clear flows, and wild redband rainbows active throughout the canyon. A full multi-hatch sequence from Trico spinners at dawn through PMDs at midday to evening caddis makes this one of Central Oregon's best August fisheries.

The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is a cold-water summer refuge with water temps holding at a perfect 55.4°F and clear conditions throughout. Midge and trico hatches are producing consistent dry-fly action in the morning; Zebra Midges and Pheasant Tail Nymphs are the go-to patterns for the wild redbands and browns in the canyon.

The Crooked River tailwater is fishing exceptionally well with water temps at a perfect 55°F and clear conditions. Midges and PMDs are producing consistent action throughout the canyon, with Zebra Midges, Copper Johns, and Pheasant Tail Nymphs leading the charge. Flows are elevated at 1,150 CFS — wade with caution, but the fish are hungry and willing.

The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is fishing well at 55.4°F despite elevated flows of 1,120 CFS. PMD hatches are firing mid-morning to early afternoon — pair a Parachute Adams with a Zebra Midge dropper for consistent action. A great escape from the summer smoke and heat.

The Crooked River tailwater is in prime summer form with ideal water temps of 55.6°F and crystal-clear flows. PMD hatches are firing mid-morning through early afternoon, bringing fish up across the riffles. This is the most fishable river in Central Oregon right now — don't miss it.
Deschutes River Fishing Report – August 22, 2026
The lower Deschutes is running clear at 3,920 CFS with water temps of 64.6°F — prime conditions for the peak of August caddis hatches. Evening dry fly fishing near Maupin and Mack's Canyon is delivering some of the best action of the season. Note an active BLM fire closure from Warm Springs to Trout Creek.
Crooked River Fishing Report — August 21, 2026 | Caddis and PMDs, 1,170 CFS
The Crooked River tailwater is running elevated at 1,170 CFS but the cold 55.6°F water keeps fish active all day. Caddis and PMD hatches are firing in the afternoons, and nymphing with Copper Johns and Pheasant Tails is producing throughout the prime upper tailwater section below Bowman Dam.

The lower Deschutes is fishing great at 3,890 CFS with clear water and temps at 64.8°F. The evening caddis hatch is firing hard from 6 PM to dark — grab an Elk Hair Caddis, get to the tailouts, and hang on. Morning BWO and midge windows also productive for early risers.
