Deschutes River Fishing Report โ October 23, 2026
Post-Atmospheric River Recovery: River Dropping, Conditions Slowly Improving
Bottom Line: The lower Deschutes is recovering from an atmospheric river event that sent flows surging and the White River flooding with glacial silt. As of this morning, the USGS Moody gauge reads 4,350 CFS โ down from a peak of roughly 6,000 CFS โ and the river is actively dropping. Water temps remain a comfortable 53ยฐF, but clarity is off-color in the Maupin area and below due to the White River influx. Fishing is challenging but not hopeless for anglers willing to work streamers and heavy nymphs.
Current Conditions (USGS, October 23, 2026)
- Flow: 4,350 CFS (USGS Moody gauge #14103000, near Biggs, OR) โ provisional, dropping trend
- Water Temp: 53ยฐF (11.7ยฐC)
- Clarity: Off-Color in Maupin area and below; better above White River confluence
- Overall Rating: Fair โ actively improving
What Happened
An atmospheric river system brought heavy precipitation to the Cascade foothills this week. While Maupin itself stayed mostly dry, dam operators opened the floodgates on Pelton/Round Butte, and the White River โ a glacially-fed tributary โ exploded from roughly 100 CFS to nearly 1,900 CFS. That surge of turbid glacial water clouded the Deschutes from the White River confluence all the way downstream to the Columbia. Significant debris โ logs, branches, and leaf litter โ is present in the current. The good news: the river crested and is dropping fast. Expect meaningfully cleaner water within 48โ72 hours.
Where to Fish
Above Sherars Falls (Sherars Bridge area, south of Maupin): This section holds better clarity, upstream of the worst White River influence. Flows are high โ wading is not recommended solo. Shore fishing from rock ledges and cliff-side access is your best bet. Work slow, deep runs with weighted nymphs or swing a big Woolly Bugger on a sink-tip.
Maupin Area & Below Sherars Falls: Off-color and debris-heavy. Fish will be stacked in slower eddy water and seams along the bank. Streamer fishing is your best option โ big, bright patterns that fish can find in colored water. Tight-line nymphing into soft seams can produce when you find slower, cleaner pockets.
Active Hatches
October is normally the prime month for the Deschutes legendary October Caddis hatch โ big, orange-bodied bugs (#8โ#10) that bring up large trout. With off-color water, the dry-fly action is suppressed right now, but as the river clears over the next few days, caddis activity should resume in earnest. Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) are also in play on overcast afternoons. Midges remain consistent year-round in the low-50s water temps.
Top Fly Recommendations
With off-color water and elevated flows, go big, bright, and deep:
- Woolly Bugger (black or olive, #4โ#6) โ ideal for streamer fishing in colored water; swing it through deeper runs and eddies
- Copper John (#10โ#14) โ heavy enough to get down fast in turbulent seams
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#12โ#16) โ classic Deschutes nymph; add a tungsten bead for extra depth
- Stimulator (#8โ#10) โ as the river clears, this large attractor dry imitates October Caddis and draws explosive topwater takes
- Elk Hair Caddis (#8โ#12) โ the quintessential October Caddis pattern; have one ready for when clarity returns
- Zebra Midge (#18โ#22) โ a backup midge pattern for slower, cleaner pockets throughout the system
Best Access Points
- Maupin City Park / Heritage Landing: Standard public access; check river level before wading โ 4,350 CFS is non-wading territory for most
- Sherars Falls Bridge: Good observation and fishing point; pocket water above and below the falls. Note: west bank above falls requires Warm Springs tribal permit
- Lower River Road (BLM): Recently graded and reported in smooth condition. Multiple pullouts from Maupin to Macks Canyon
- South Junction / Trout Creek: Good access to lower canyon water; drift boat anglers have best options at these flows
Hazards & Notes
- ⚠️ High Water Warning: 4,350 CFS is NOT safe for wading. Wade only in very shallow margins with a wading staff and PFD
- 🪟 Debris Alert: Logs, branches, and heavy leaf litter in the current โ keep flies clean and watch for drift debris if running a boat
- 📈 Improving Trend: River is dropping โ expect significantly better conditions within 2โ4 days barring additional precipitation
- 🆔 Tribal Boundaries: West bank above Sherars Falls is Warm Springs tribal land โ obtain a Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs fishing permit before accessing
