Current Conditions at a Glance

  • Flow: 1,150 CFS (USGS Gauge 14087400 โ€“ below Opal Springs, near Culver); BOR-controlled section above Opal Springs: ~37โ€“40 CFS
  • Water Temp: 54ยฐF (12.1ยฐC) โ€” consistent tailwater temps, optimal for year-round trout
  • Clarity: Clear โ€” crystal tailwater visibility, sight-fishing in reach
  • Overall Rating: Good โ€” low, clear flows demand a stealthy approach but reward the disciplined angler

River Conditions

The Crooked River is in its classic late-season low-water mode. The Bureau of Reclamation is currently releasing approximately 37โ€“40 CFS through the prime fly-fishing reach between Bowman Dam and Opal Springs โ€” the section that draws anglers from across the Pacific Northwest to Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch. The USGS gauge at 14087400 (below Opal Springs, near Culver) reads 1,150 CFS, reflecting the substantial groundwater contribution from Opal Springs well downstream of the prime trout water. Water temperatures are holding at a steady 54ยฐF โ€” the hallmark of this groundwater-influenced tailwater system, which keeps fish active year-round regardless of air temperature. Clarity is excellent, with visibility extending several feet into the water column. Fish are visible in their lies, which is both a blessing and a challenge.

What's Hatching

October on the Crooked River is classic midge-and-olive territory. Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis) have been appearing in force during midday and afternoon hours โ€” overcast days produce the most consistent emergences, so don't sleep in on cloudy mornings. Expect size #16โ€“20 duns and spinners. Mahogany Duns have been trickling through in the early afternoon; they're winding down for the season but can still trigger selective rises in the flatter water. Midges are the bread-and-butter hatch at this time of year โ€” fish are feeding on them in all life stages from early morning through evening. Size #20โ€“24 larvae and emergers drifted just under the surface film are money. Don't overlook October Caddis โ€” the occasional big orange caddis still skating through a slow pool can draw a slashing strike from a fish that hasn't seen many dries lately.

Top Flies

  • Zebra Midge #20โ€“22 โ€” The Crooked's signature fly; black thread, silver wire, chrome bead โ€” fish it on 5X or 6X
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph #16โ€“18 โ€” Baetis nymph match, dead-drift through runs and seams
  • Parachute Adams #16โ€“18 โ€” Versatile dry for BWO hatches; high visibility in low-light conditions
  • Copper John #16โ€“18 โ€” Excellent dropper fly for two-nymph rigs in deeper slots
  • Elk Hair Caddis #12โ€“14 (Tan or Orange) โ€” Occasional big attractor dry, worth a few casts along shaded banks
  • Chubby Chernobyl #10โ€“12 โ€” Strike indicator dry when running a midge dropper; floats all day

Best Access Points

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam offers excellent public access through the Crooked River National Grassland. Key spots include: Ogden Wayside (US-97 south of Terrebonne, quick access to some of the most productive runs), Lone Pine Flat (off Smith Rock Way, good for walk-and-wade anglers who want to spread out), Chimney Rock area (scenic canyon water, excellent nymphing structure), and the Crooked River Ranch community access via Eagle Rd. Parking is available at most access sites. This is primarily walk-and-wade water โ€” no floatable flows at 37 CFS.

Tactics for Low, Clear Water

At these flows, fish are spooky. Approach runs from downstream, stay low, and wear drab clothing. Downsize your tippet โ€” 5X fluorocarbon for nymphs, 6X for dries โ€” and lengthen your leaders to 12โ€“14 feet. Long, drag-free drifts are non-negotiable. Early morning (before 9 AM) can be surprisingly productive even without visible hatch activity; fish are still feeding aggressively from overnight. The Crooked's wild rainbow trout are strong, athletic, and plentiful โ€” worth every bit of the finesse required.

Hazards & Regulations

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release only for trout, fly-fishing only in designated sections โ€” check the current ODFW regulations before fishing. Flows can change quickly with BOR adjustments; BOR is expected to increase releases to approximately 50 CFS around November 1 as winter operations begin. No special closures reported at this time. Watch for rattlesnakes in the canyon during warm afternoon hours โ€” even in October, warmer days bring them out on south-facing rock faces.
