Conditions: Good. October is arguably the finest month of the year on the Crooked River, and 2026 is proving no exception. Water temperature is a comfortable 53ยฐF (11.9ยฐC), with the crystal-clear visibility this spring-fed tailwater is famous for.

๐ชฐ What's Hatching
The Crooked River is a BWO factory in October. Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis tricaudatus, sizes 18โ22) are hatching heavily on overcast afternoons, typically peaking between noon and 3 PM. This is one of Central Oregon's best tailwater dry-fly windows of the entire year โ bring your finest tippet and your patience. The fish here are wild, well-educated, and brutally selective; they will reject a sloppy drift without a second look.
Midges are the bread-and-butter pattern all day long on the Crooked. In the early morning before the BWO hatch ignites, a Zebra Midge drifted through the seams below riffles will keep your rod bent. October also sees occasional Pale Morning Dun stragglers and some small caddis activity in the lower canyon sections near the Crooked River Ranch.
๐ฃ Top Fly Recommendations
- Zebra Midge (#18โ22) โ The #1 producer on the Crooked River year-round. Drift it deep in the seams, or fish a two-midge dropper rig on 6X tippet. Black/red and black/silver combos are most consistent. Stock up at bugsnjugs.com.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16โ18) โ An outstanding BWO emerger imitation. Fish it just below the surface film during the hatch window โ fish key on emergers, not full adults, much of the time. Find it at bugsnjugs.com.
- Parachute Adams (#16โ18) โ When fish are visibly rising to BWOs, a well-presented Parachute Adams on 6X tippet is as good as it gets on the Crooked. Approach with stealth; these trout spook easily in clear water. Available at bugsnjugs.com.
- Copper John (#14โ16) โ A reliable nymph for faster runs and pockets. Works well as the point fly in a tandem nymph rig with a midge dropper. Get yours at bugsnjugs.com.
- Woolly Bugger (#8, olive or black) โ Don't overlook the Woolly Bugger for the larger, deeper pools โ especially in the lower canyon near Crooked River Ranch. A slowly stripped or swung bugger can move the biggest fish in the river. Pick one up at bugsnjugs.com.
๐ Best Access Points
- Lower Crooked River Recreation Area (BLM): At the end of Lower Crooked River Road off Hwy 97 south of Terrebonne. Primary access to the prime first 3โ4 miles below Bowman Dam. Parking is free.
- Bowman Dam Parking Area: Walk downstream from the dam for the most technical trout fishing. The first mile below the dam holds the largest, most selective fish in the canyon.
- Crooked River Ranch Community Access: Additional wade-in opportunities along the middle canyon section. Bring a map โ roads in the area can be confusing for first-time visitors.
โ ๏ธ Hazards & Notes
The Crooked River's wild redbands are acutely sensitive to angling pressure and presentation quality. 6X tippet is the minimum โ don't be surprised if you need 7X on the flat-water reaches during the BWO hatch. Barbless hooks are required on this Wild and Scenic River reach. Always wet your hands before handling fish. The canyon road to lower access points can be rutted after fall rains; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Watch for rattlesnakes on warm October afternoons โ they remain active in the canyon until temperatures drop hard.
