About the Crooked River

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam near Prineville is one of Central Oregon's most underrated fly fishing destinations. A spring-fed tailwater with remarkably consistent flows and temperatures, it fishes well year-round — even in winter when most Oregon rivers are blown out.

The fish are selective. Clear water and heavy pressure have educated them, but that makes catching one on a #20 midge all the more satisfying.

Access & Regulations

  • Primary access via Lower Crooked River National Back Country Byway (Hwy 27 south of Prineville)
  • Multiple BLM pullouts along the highway
  • Catch-and-release from Bowman Dam to Lone Pine Bridge
  • Check current ODFW regulations before fishing

Technique Tips

  • Long leaders (12–15 ft) with 5X or 6X tippet in clear water.
  • Fish a two-midge tandem rig: a #20 Zebra above a #22 RS2.
  • Indicator nymphing works, but so does Czech nymphing in the faster runs.
  • Early mornings and late afternoons produce the best action.
