About the Crooked River
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam near Prineville is one of Central Oregon's most underrated fly fishing destinations. A spring-fed tailwater with remarkably consistent flows and temperatures, it fishes well year-round — even in winter when most Oregon rivers are blown out.
The fish are selective. Clear water and heavy pressure have educated them, but that makes catching one on a #20 midge all the more satisfying.
What's Hatching
| Hatch | Season | Patterns | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midges | Year-round | Zebra Midge #20–22, Disco Midge #20 | The primary food source. Fish them always. |
| Blue-Winged Olive | Oct–Apr (cloudy days) | RS2 #18–20, Parachute BWO #18 | Watch for rising fish on overcast mornings. |
| PMD | May–Aug | Sparkle Dun #16, PMD Parachute #16 | Morning hatch, flat water rises |
| Caddis | June–Sept | Elk Hair Caddis #14–16, X-Caddis #14 | Less explosive than Deschutes, but present |
