Gauge: USGS 14087400, Crooked River below Opal Springs โ 1,190 CFS | Water Temp: 55.4ยฐF | Clarity: Clear
The Crooked River's legendary Mother's Day Caddis hatch is in full swing, and the bugs are coming off in what one local shop is calling a near-biblical emergence. If you've been waiting for the right time to hit this Central Oregon gem, this is it. The tailwater section below Bowman Dam is fishing well despite flows that have bumped up from the onset of irrigation season.
Current Conditions
The USGS gauge at Opal Springs is reading 1,190 CFS โ this downstream gauge includes the significant contribution from Opal Springs and reflects total river volume near Culver. The prime fishing section in the first 10 miles below Bowman Dam is running at more moderate flows, consistent with typical irrigation-season increases that began in late April. Water clarity near the dam remains excellent โ crystal clear, cold tailwater conditions that make this section so special. At 55.4ยฐF, the water temperature is ideal for trout activity and right in the sweet spot to keep hatches firing throughout the day.
Hatches
- Mother's Day Caddis (Brachycentrus americanus): The main event. Caddis are hatching in enormous numbers, with adults and egg-layers visible on and above the water throughout the day. Fish are keying on subsurface pupa and emergers more than dry flies right now โ be ready to adapt. Look for egg-sac patterns with a bright green abdomen to stand out.
- Midges: Still trickling off, especially in the mornings, but being overshadowed by the caddis show. Zebra Midges remain a reliable backup, particularly in slower, deeper water.
- Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs): Mostly winding down for the season, but a size #18โ#20 BWO can still pick up fish during overcast periods.
Top Fly Recommendations
The Crooked rewards anglers who match the hatch precisely. Right now, it's all about caddis in olive, tan, and chartreuse โ with a special emphasis on subsurface presentations:
- Elk Hair Caddis โ The go-to surface pattern for the Mother's Day hatch. Peacock or olive body, sizes #14โ#16. Fish it in the film or with a gentle twitch to imitate an egg-laying adult.
- Parachute Adams โ A versatile dry that doubles as a BWO or caddis adult impression. Excellent when fish are showing selective rises in slower currents.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph โ Olive PT variations are deadly right now. Fish size #16โ#18 on a tight-line nymphing rig or under an indicator in deeper runs.
- Zebra Midge โ Don't leave home without it. Black/silver in sizes #18โ#22 continues to produce fish throughout the day, especially in the crystal-clear slower pools near the dam.
- Copper John โ Add weight to your nymph rig with a Copper John as the point fly. The flash gets attention in clear water and it doubles as a caddis pupa impression.
- Woolly Bugger โ Swinging an olive or black Woolly Bugger with a caddis pupa dropper can be a killer searching technique when fish aren't responding to smaller patterns.
Best Access Points
- Bowman Dam Trailhead (Prineville Reservoir State Park): Start at the top and work downstream. The first 2โ3 miles below the dam hold the highest fish concentrations. Park at the designated BLM lot.
- Lower Crooked River Recreation Area (Hwy 27): Multiple pullouts along OR-27 south of Prineville provide easy access to the upper tailwater section. Best wade-in access for the first 8 miles below Bowman Dam.
- Chimney Rock: A scenic stretch with excellent dry fly water in the shallower riffles. About 12 miles south of Prineville on OR-27.
- Lone Pine Bridge: Popular access point with good parking. Produces well during the caddis hatch when fish stack in the riffles adjacent to the bridge.
Hazards and Notes
- โ ๏ธ Slippery Rocks: The Crooked River's algae-covered basalt is notoriously slick. Studded felt soles are strongly recommended โ Korkers or similar wading boots with studs will save you a dunking.
- โ ๏ธ Rising Flows: Irrigation season has begun and flows will continue to fluctuate based on agricultural demand from Bowman Dam. Check USGS gauge data before your trip โ flows can change day-to-day.
- The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is open to fishing year-round. It is designated Wild and Scenic by the BLM. Please pack out all trash and practice Leave No Trace.
- Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged for the wild rainbow and whitefish population in this section. Barbless hooks and quick, wet-hand releases make a difference.
