*Gauge 14087400 is downstream of Opal Springs, which contributes substantial additional flow. The prime tailwater fishing section — Bowman Dam to Lone Pine Bridge — runs at normal, lower summer flows per local fly shop reports (Confluence Fly Shop, 8/21/2026).
Current Conditions
The Crooked River tailwater is fishing well for early September. Cold, regulated releases from Prineville Reservoir keep the prime 12-mile stretch from Bowman Dam to Lone Pine Bridge running clear and cool — and right now that is exactly what you want. Water temperatures are reading 54.9°F at the downstream gauge, consistent with the cold tailwater character of this fishery. Clarity is excellent throughout. Nymphing has been the most reliable technique over the past few weeks, though afternoon dry fly windows are becoming a regular highlight.
Prineville Reservoir is sitting at approximately 32% capacity, which means dam releases are being managed conservatively. Expect stable, consistent flows — great news for wading confidence and water clarity through September.
What's Hatching
PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) remain the star of the show on the Crooked River. The most consistent dry fly action is happening in the early-to-mid afternoon (roughly 1–4 PM) when PMDs begin emerging in the slower seams and edges. Before the hatch, split-case PMD nymphs and cripple patterns fished subsurface are excellent. Brown and tan caddis (#14–16) are also active throughout the day — swing a soft-hackle pupa or dead-drift an Elk Hair Caddis for consistent action. Midges — the year-round anchor of the Crooked — are producing in the flats and tailouts especially in the early morning. Small stonefly nymphs (#12) and Pheasant Tail variations continue to get daily action on the nymph rig.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–16): The workhorse of any Crooked River nymph rig — covers PMDs, caddis pupa, and general food forms all day.
- Zebra Midge (#18–20, red/black or silver/black): Highly effective in the slower flats and tailouts; deadly morning and evening when fish are sipping midges.
- Copper John (#14–16): Gets down fast in riffled runs and triggers aggressive takes from wild redband and mountain whitefish alike.
- Parachute Adams (#16–18): Versatile dry that covers PMD afternoon risers and opportunistic surface feeders throughout the day.
- Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16, tan/brown): Match the caddis activity; particularly productive in the afternoon and evening hours.
Best Access Points
The prime fly fishing corridor is the BLM Wild and Scenic stretch from Bowman Dam downstream approximately 12 miles to Lone Pine Bridge, accessible via pullouts along Crooked River Highway (Hwy 27). Chimney Rock is the most popular access point, offering productive wade water in both directions through the basalt canyon. The Crooked River Ranch area provides excellent bank access and consistent, fishy-looking canyon bends. Lower pullouts near Terrebonne offer easy access and good wading through wide riffled sections.

- Catch and release for trout in the Wild and Scenic reach — handle fish quickly and carefully in the cold water.
- Watch for rattlesnakes on rocky, sunny banks — still very active in September warmth.
