The Crooked River’s legendary tailwater fishery is in peak late-summer form. The USGS gauge #14087400 (below Opal Springs, near Culver) is reading 1,240 CFS this morning — this reflects combined flows including the cold groundwater input from Opal Springs further downstream. The prime fly fishing section, the 10-to-12-mile Wild and Scenic corridor directly below Bowman Dam near Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch, is running at approximately 226 CFS based on recent reports from local shops, placing it right in the sweet spot for clear-water wading and technical trout fishing. Water temperature is a beautiful 55°F (12.8°C) — absolutely ideal for wild redband rainbows.

Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are the dominant hatch right now, firing in strong numbers from mid-morning through early afternoon. Multiple fly shops have confirmed excellent PMD activity as recently as August 29th, with fish actively rising to emergers and cripples in the surface film. Midges are the year-round backbone of this fishery and remain active all day, especially in the slower pools and glassy flats that define this tailwater. A modest caddis presence has been noted in the lower canyon reaches during evening hours. Overall, the Crooked River is fishing at an excellent 8+ out of 10 right now — a great late-summer destination.
🎣 Top Fly Recommendations
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–20) — The single most reliable fly on the Crooked. Fish it deep in riffles or as a trailing dropper under a dry fly.
- Zebra Midge (#18–22) — Essential in slow pools and flats. Dead-drift a two-nymph rig with this as the point fly for consistent redband action.
- Copper John (#16–18) — Weight and flash get it down in deeper runs; excellent searching nymph throughout the tailwater.
- Parachute Adams (#14–18) — A versatile dry that covers both PMD and midge rises; deadly during the mid-morning PMD hatch window.
- Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16) — Effective in the lower canyon reaches during evening caddis activity.
📍 Best Access Points
- Bowman Dam Trailhead (Mile 0) — Walk-in access to the first mile below the dam; consistently the best midge and nymph water on the entire river. Crowds possible on weekends — arrive early.
- HWY 27 BLM Pullouts (Miles 1–8) — Multiple signed pullouts provide wade access to excellent run-and-riffle water through the canyon. Each pullout has its own character — explore them all.
- Crooked River Ranch Overlook — Scenic overlook with trail access to the river; excellent evening midge fishing in the pools below.
- Lower Canyon (Miles 8–12, near Terrebonne) — Still productive but sees more traffic; ideal for anglers wanting a shorter hike to the water.

The Crooked River canyon is technically demanding — crystal-clear, slow-moving water means spooky trout that demand light tippet (5X to 7X), stealthy approaches, and careful wading on slippery basalt. Barbless hooks are strongly encouraged; this wild redband population is entirely self-sustaining with zero hatchery supplementation — handle fish with care and minimize air exposure. The desert canyon offers little shade mid-day and temperatures can exceed 95°F by early afternoon in late August. An early morning start is highly recommended — the PMD hatch will be over before you know it. Bring plenty of water.
