Crooked River Report – July 26, 2026: Central Oregon's Best Fishing Right Now — Caddis, Midges & Cold Clear Water

Current Conditions
The Crooked River is fishing exceptionally well heading into the last weekend of July 2026. USGS gauge 14087400 (below Opal Springs, near Culver) recorded 1,160 CFS as of 5:00 AM PDT today — this reading includes the substantial cold-water contribution from Opal Springs downstream of the primary fishing zone. The water temperature is a fish-friendly 56°F, a direct benefit of this spring-fed tailwater fishery regulated by Bowman Dam. Clarity is excellent — crystal clear and gorgeous canyon water.
With the Deschutes dealing with fire closures and other rivers running warm, the Crooked is the clear choice for Central Oregon fly fishers this weekend.
Active Hatches & Best Fishing Windows
The caddis hatch is the headliner right now, with surface activity picking up around 10:00 AM and continuing into the evening. Small caddis (#16–18) in tan and black are the primary dry fly option, and fish are keying on them with increasing confidence as the season progresses. PMDs are still showing in the morning hours, though fish seem to prefer caddis as the day warms up.
Subsurface fishing remains equally productive. Midges are active throughout the day — a Zebra Midge fished in the seams and tailouts will catch fish from first light to dusk. Scuds are a year-round staple of this tailwater ecosystem. For something exciting, swinging a small leech through a deep run can produce explosive strikes from the Crooked's well-fed rainbows.
With an estimated 4,000 trout per mile, you won't have to look far for willing fish. Work the riffles, runs, and undercut banks systematically and expect consistent action throughout the day.

- Elk Hair Caddis (#16–18, tan) — Match the current hatch; the most important dry fly on the Crooked right now.
- Parachute Adams (#16–18) — Versatile attractor dry for both PMD and caddis windows.
- Zebra Midge (#18–20, black/silver) — The Crooked River year-round staple; fish it all day in the seams and tailouts.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) — Bread-and-butter nymph; dead-drift through riffles and the edges of runs.
- Copper John (#16, red) — Fast-sinking attractor nymph; excellent as the point fly in a two-nymph rig.

Access Points
The primary access for the Crooked River below Bowman Dam is via Crooked River Ranch (Lone Pine Road off Hwy 97, north of Terrebonne) and the Crooked River National Grassland trailheads near Terrebonne. The canyon section offers miles of lightly pressured water — hike down away from the road for the best fishing. There are no known closures or hazards as of this report. ODFW regulations require fly-fishing only with artificial flies and single barbless hooks on this section.
