Crooked River Conditions — October 31, 2026

Flow: 1,170 CFS (USGS Gauge 14087400 – Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) • Water Temp: 53°F • Clarity: Off-Color to Turbid

The Crooked River is experiencing a significant high-water event this Halloween weekend. The USGS gauge at Culver (below Opal Springs, gauge 14087400) is reading 1,170 CFS — dramatically elevated above normal fall levels and well above fishable conditions for fly fishing on most of the river. Recent heavy rainfall across the Crooked River watershed, combined with runoff from unregulated side drainages, has pushed flows to levels not typically seen this time of year. Overall conditions are rated Poor. Most anglers should plan to wait this out and return when flows subside.

⚠️ Conditions Breakdown by Section

Below Bowman Dam (regulated section): The section immediately downstream of Bowman Dam is controlled by Prineville Reservoir releases and may be running at lower flows than the downstream gauge indicates. As of October 22nd, local shop reports had this section at approximately 35 CFS — while the dam may be holding flows back, unregulated tributary runoff and off-color water from side drainages can still compromise fishing quality. Scout carefully before wading.

Crooked River Ranch to Terrebonne/Culver area: This section is seeing the full brunt of elevated conditions. At 1,170 CFS measured below Opal Springs, water in this reach is high, fast, and likely turbid. Do not wade. Bank access may be flooded or unsafe.

🪰 What's Hatching (for When Conditions Improve)

When the Crooked drops back to fishable levels, you'll find one of fall's best hatch windows. Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) are peak-active throughout October and November on the Crooked, especially on overcast and drizzly days — exactly the kind of weather that follows a major rain event. Expect fish to be stacked and hungry once flows normalize. Mahogany Duns may also be present in shallower riffles, and Midges will be active throughout the day in calmer sections. Whitefish are currently spawning, making egg patterns an excellent option as a dropper once conditions allow.

🎣 Top Fly Recommendations (Ready for When It Drops)

  • Zebra Midge (Size 22–24, tungsten bead, red or black) — The single most consistent producer on the Crooked all fall and winter
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (Size 16–18) — BWO emerger imitation, fish tight to the bottom in slower runs
  • Chubby Chernobyl (Size 14) — Excellent dry-dropper indicator for low-flow conditions; tough to sink
  • Copper John (Size 16–18, red or orange) — Heavy attractor nymph, good in pocket water and seams
  • Parachute Adams (Size 18–20) — BWO dry fly for when redsides are visibly rising in flat water
  • Elk Hair Caddis (Size 16, orange) — October Caddis adult imitation for afternoon surface activity

📍 Access Points

Bowman Dam Campground provides the primary access directly below the dam and is your best bet for finding any fishable water in current conditions. Lone Pine Road and Crooked River Ranch community access areas provide additional entry points but should be considered carefully given high water and potentially unstable road conditions from recent rains. Always check road access before driving in.

⚠️ Safety Advisory

Do not wade the Crooked River in current conditions. Bank edges are unstable, water is fast and off-color, and the danger of sweepers and debris is elevated. Monitor the USGS gauge at 14087400 at waterdata.usgs.gov. We recommend waiting for the downstream gauge to drop below 300 CFS before planning a visit, and confirming the upper section with a local shop call. The Crooked River will fish exceptionally well when conditions normalize — patience will be rewarded.

Flow data: USGS Gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver, OR) as of 5:00 AM PDT, October 31, 2026. Temperature and flow data are provisional and subject to revision.
