Crooked River Tailwater โ€” November 2, 2026

The Crooked River tailwater is offering a classic November technical fishing experience. The USGS gauge below Opal Springs (site #14087400) reads 1,340 cfs โ€” a figure that reflects the enormous cold-groundwater contribution of Opal Springs, one of the Pacific Northwest's largest cold springs, which adds over 1,200 cfs of consistent 53ยฐF spring water to the river. The prime tailwater canyon section between Bowman Dam and the Opal Springs confluence is running at much lower flows โ€” approximately 35โ€“50 cfs based on recent local fly shop reports โ€” offering ideal low-water conditions for stalking wary canyon rainbows. Water temperature is a steady 53ยฐF and clarity is crystal clear throughout the tailwater section above Opal Springs.

November is genuinely one of the most underrated months on the Crooked. The crowds are gone after the fall rush, the tailwater keeps temperatures in a fishable range year-round, and the resident wild rainbows are feeding aggressively ahead of the deep winter months. On overcast days, expect fish to be active throughout the day.

What's Hatching

Midges (Chironomids) are the backbone of winter fishing on the Crooked โ€” they hatch every single day in sizes 20โ€“24 in black, red, and olive. Blue-Winged Olives (BWO/Baetis) provide the best dry fly action, emerging on overcast November afternoons (size 18โ€“22). Whitefish are actively spawning this time of year, meaning egg patterns fished below your dry can be surprisingly effective. October Caddis nymphs are still present in the canyon seams.

Top Fly Recommendations

  • Zebra Midge (size 20โ€“22) โ€” the undisputed #1 Crooked River fly in November. Fish it under a small indicator in pools and slow seams; black with a silver wire rib is the proven color.
  • Chubby Chernobyl (size 14) โ€” outstanding dry-dropper platform; float it with a Zebra Midge or Pheasant Tail trailing 18 inches below for a two-fly rig that covers all the bases.
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16โ€“18) โ€” dead-drift along the bottom in the canyon's deeper glides; a must-have in your box for any tailwater in November.
  • Copper John (size 16โ€“18) โ€” excellent attractor nymph in the faster riffles and pocket water; the added weight helps in faster currents.
  • Parachute Adams (size 18โ€“20) โ€” switch to this the moment you see rising fish during BWO hatches; fish it in the slower pools where trout are sipping.
  • Elk Hair Caddis (size 18) โ€” worth carrying for October Caddis stragglers; try it in protected canyon bends during afternoon warmth.

Best Access Points

  • Bowman Dam / ODFW Access: Roadside access near the dam with short trails to the upper tailwater; limited parking in winter but the closest access to the prime canyon section. Best for getting away from people in November.
  • Crooked River Ranch (Lone Pine Road): Maintained community trail access into the canyon. Day-use access is available but may require a fee for non-residents; check current access rules before the trip.
  • Lower Canyon BLM Access: Several pull-offs south of Terrebonne along the canyon road allow hike-in access to less-pressured mid-canyon water. These spots see very little pressure in November.
  • Smith Rock State Park Area: The lower canyon section near the confluence is accessible via park trails; great views and decent fishing, though this far-downstream section has more flow influence from Opal Springs.

Hazards & Closures

Low-water conditions in the canyon above Opal Springs require a stealthy approach โ€” use long leaders (12โ€“14 ft), lighter tippet (6X), and stay low. Canyon walls can be icy in the morning; traction cleats are a smart addition to your kit. The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release only for trout โ€” barbless hooks are required by law. Dress in layers; the canyon floor can be 10โ€“15ยฐF colder than Bend or Redmond on still winter mornings.

Flow data: USGS Crooked River below Opal Springs gauge #14087400, as of 4:00 AM PST, November 2, 2026. Data provisional. Upper tailwater section flow (~35โ€“50 cfs) sourced from local fly shop observations as of late October 2026. Reported by Bugs-N-Jugs Fly Shop โ€” Central Oregon's daily fishing report source.
