If you're looking for where to be in Central Oregon this weekend, the Crooked River below Bowman Dam is the answer. Local shop reports from July 24 describe it as the most fishable river in the region right now — water temps are excellent, flows are steady, smoke is manageable, and the trout are actively feeding. USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) recorded 1,100 cfs this morning, which reflects the total river flow after the large Opal Springs contribution enters downstream of the dam. The tailwater fishing section directly below Bowman Dam (the prime catch-and-release reach near Crooked River Ranch and Terrebonne) runs at considerably lower flows — typical summer releases keep this section wading-friendly and productive. Water temperature at the gauge was 56°F (13.3°C) as of 5:00 AM PDT — outstanding cold-water trout temperatures that keep fish active and healthy all day long. Clarity is excellent, with clear, spring-fed water giving you full visibility to rising fish.

Hatches & Fly Recommendations

The Crooked is in full summer caddis mode, with PMDs still making an appearance in the mornings. Expect hatches to start around 10 AM, taper midday, then resume strong from 2 PM through evening. The fish are picky enough that fly rotation throughout a hatch is key — don't stay on one pattern the whole session.

• Dry Flies: The Elk Hair Caddis (#16–18, tan or black) is the workhorse dry right now — it matches the prevalent small caddis perfectly. The Parachute Adams (#16–18) covers the PMD window in the morning and is a reliable all-day searching pattern. Keep multiple patterns in your box and rotate every 20–30 minutes to stay ahead of selective trout.
• Nymphs: Sub-surface fishing remains highly productive. The Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) is deadly for PMD and caddis pupa imitation — a go-to on the Crooked year-round. The Zebra Midge (#18–20) is a consistent producer; midges hatch year-round here and the trout never stop keying on them, especially in slow flats and tailouts. The Copper John (#16–18, red or green) makes a great anchor fly in a two-nymph rig.
• Streamers: Swing or dead-drift a Woolly Bugger (black or olive, #8–10) through deeper pools and undercut banks — leeches and baitfish imitations have been drawing strikes from the bigger rainbows.

Best Access Points

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam offers approximately 8 miles of easily accessible river with multiple pull-outs along Hwy 27. Key access points include:

• Bowman Dam Tailwater — the top of the catch-and-release section; pull off near the dam for uncrowded early-morning fishing
• Chimney Rock Campground (BLM) — accessible fishing platforms available, great mid-section access
• Palisades Campground (BLM) — accessible fishing platform; excellent pool and riffle structure
• Crooked River Ranch area — multiple pull-outs with easy bank access to prime riffles

The entire reach is catch-and-release for trout — handle fish with wet hands and return them quickly.
