Current Conditions

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is fishing exceptionally well. This tailwater gem is benefiting from cool, consistent releases that are keeping water temperatures in the ideal range: 56°F (13.1°C) — perfect for aggressive trout and comfortable, all-day angling. Clarity is gin-clear, as is typical for this spring-fed tailwater.

A note on flow data: USGS Gauge 14087400 (located below Opal Springs, near Culver) recorded 1,290 cfs as of 5:00 AM PDT today. This gauge sits downstream of the large Opal Springs inflow, which significantly boosts volume. The prime fly fishing section below Bowman Dam to the Crooked River Ranch area is running at approximately 200 cfs based on recent local reports — a perfectly wadeable flow for most anglers.

Hatches & Fly Recommendations

July is the absolute peak month for PMDs on the Crooked River — and it shows. The Pale Morning Dun hatch is reliable and consistent, building through the morning hours and typically running from around 10 AM through early afternoon. The slower pools and slick glides in the upper canyon section near Crooked River Ranch see the most consistent PMD rises. A Parachute Adams in #16–18 is a spot-on imitation and has been producing throughout the hatch window.

Caddis have become even more prevalent in the past two weeks, with the best action in the late afternoon and evening. Small caddis dries in #16–18 have been the hot ticket — tie on an Elk Hair Caddis in tan or black and work the riffles and seams. Pro tip from the local shops: keep rotating patterns during the hatch, as the Crooked fish can get selective.

Sub-surface fishing remains productive throughout the day. The Pheasant Tail Nymph in #16–18 is the workhorse PMD imitation that every Crooked River angler should carry. Drop a Zebra Midge in #18–20 off the back for a deadly two-fly rig that covers both the midge and PMD nymph bases. The Copper John continues to anchor rigs well and provides enough weight to get down in faster runs. Don't overlook a Chubby Chernobyl as a high-floating dry-dropper indicator — it's been seeing action as a searching pattern in the riffles, and fish occasionally eat the foam fly itself.

Scuds, small caddis pupa, and swung Woolly Bugger patterns (olive or black, #10–12) are rounding out the repertoire for anglers willing to vary their approach.

• Crooked River Ranch: Excellent wade access through the Ranch community; multiple pull-outs along Lower Ranch Road
• Lone Pine Recreation Area (BLM): Popular access point with parking, good riffle and run fishing
• Chimney Rock Recreation Area (BLM): Scenic canyon section with quality pocket water and longer pools
• Lower Canyon access via Hwy 27: Multiple pull-outs south of Prineville for the upper canyon section
