The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is running at significantly elevated flows this morning — 1,230 CFS at the USGS Opal Springs gauge (gauge 14087400). This is well above typical summer tailwater levels (normally 80–300 CFS) and is almost certainly the result of irrigation-season releases from Prineville Reservoir. Wade fishing in most sections is dangerous and not recommended at this time. Fish from the bank at designated access pullouts only, and do not attempt to cross.

🐟 What's Happening on the Water
The Crooked River tailwater is one of Central Oregon's most consistent fisheries, and even at elevated flows, the cold 56°F water keeps fish active and cooperative — if you can get a fly to them safely. When flows spike like this, trout abandon the main current seams and stack up in slower eddies, inside bends, and backwater pockets near the bank. Think like a fish: find the softest water adjacent to the heavy flow.
Despite the high water, hatches are still happening. The cold spring-fed temperatures from Bowman Dam keep insect activity surprisingly predictable:
- PMDs (Pale Morning Duns, size 16–18): Early afternoon PMD hatches are reported active this week. Fish will rise in protected eddies when bugs are on the water — a Parachute Adams or Pheasant Tail Nymph fished in slower bank water can be very effective.
- Midges (size 20–24): Year-round staple of the Crooked. Morning and evening midge clusters bring consistent surface activity in calmer bankside water. A Zebra Midge under an indicator is the go-to producer.
- Caddis (size 14–16): Evening caddis activity is possible in slower sections. An Elk Hair Caddis skated through a calm eddy can draw strikes at dusk.

📍 Best Access Points
At 1,230 CFS, access is limited to bankside fishing only. Prioritize spots where the canyon widens and slower water is available:
- Crooked River National Grassland (BLM, Hwy 97 / Lower Bridge Way): Multiple pullouts with bank access; fish the inside bends and eddy lines.
- Crooked River Ranch (private, day-use fee): Some of the best bank access on the tailwater; check in at the ranch office before fishing.
- Smith Rock State Park area (downstream): Scenic canyon access; expect crowds on the weekend. Stay on designated trails.
