Current Conditions

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is in peak summer condition, and July 30 finds it right at the top of its game. Flows at 1,180 cfs are slightly above the late-summer baseline but well within the normal operating range for this dam-controlled system — wading is comfortable in most sections and drift boats have plenty of water to work with. The real headline is water temperature: at 55.4°F, the Crooked is a cool, life-giving oasis in the Central Oregon high desert, and the redband rainbows and wild browns that call this canyon home are actively feeding throughout the day.

Water clarity is excellent, as it almost always is on this spring-influenced tailwater. That gin-clear water is a double-edged sword — it makes spotting risers easy, but also means your presentation has to be on point. Long leaders (12–14 ft), fine tippet (5X or 6X), and careful wading are essential to success here.

Hatch Activity

July is the peak month for Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) on the Crooked River, and right now they are delivering the best dry fly fishing of the year. PMD hatches build from mid-morning through early afternoon, with the most reliable action in the slower pools and flats of the upper canyon section near Crooked River Ranch. Fish sip PMD duns delicately — watch for subtle rises in the flats and position yourself well upstream before casting.

Caddis have been active from midday into the evening, and ODFW's recent Central Zone report specifically called out productive caddis hatches in the Crooked River Ranch area. A Parachute Adams (#14–16) serves as a great all-day crossover between PMD and caddis activity. Sub-surface fishing remains strong throughout the day — a Pheasant Tail Nymph or Zebra Midge under a small indicator in the deep slots and runs is a reliable producer when fish aren't showing on top. The Copper John in gold or red is another consistent performer in the faster riffle sections.

Top Fly Recommendations

• Parachute Adams (#14–16) — Matches PMDs and caddis; the one fly to have on the Crooked in July
• Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–18) — Killer sub-surface option all day in runs and riffles
• Zebra Midge (#18–22) — Essential for the fussier fish in flat water and clear pools
• Copper John (#14–16, gold/red) — Fast-water anchor fly and consistent producer in riffles
• Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16, tan) — Midday through evening caddis hatch coverage
• Chubby Chernobyl (#12–14) — High-vis attractor for faster runs; doubles as a midge/caddis indicator rig
• Stimulator (#14, yellow/orange) — Low-riding summer attractor; surprisingly effective on selective Crooked River fish

Best Access Points

• Crooked River Ranch — The crown jewel; multiple walk-in access points along the canyon rim trail with excellent pool-and-flat water. Prime PMD territory.
• Lower Canyon / Opal Springs area — Deeper, slightly faster water with larger fish; best for nymphing and early morning streamers
• Terrebonne / Smith Rock area — Upper reach with easy highway access; popular with beginners and a solid option for evening caddis risers
• BLM Lower Canyon — Requires a bit of a hike but rewards with solitude and quality fish in less-pressured water

Tactics & Tips

The Crooked fishes best when you slow down. This is a sight-fishing river — look before you step. On warm afternoons, scan the flat water for subtle PMD sippers before wading in and spooking them. Fish the shaded canyon walls in the early afternoon when sunlight drives trout into shadows. The Zebra Midge is your secret weapon when visible hatches slow and fish seem lockjawed — size down to #20–22 and dead-drift it just off the bottom.

Hazards & Notes

⚠️ No harvest of rainbow trout over 20 inches. The Crooked River supports a rare wild redband population — handle all fish carefully and minimize time out of the water, especially given warm ambient air temperatures.

🚨 Rattlesnakes: The canyon walls and rocky banks are prime rattlesnake habitat in July. Watch your step on rocky ledges and never reach into crevices or brush without looking.

🌟 Fishing pressure: Weekday mornings offer the best solitude. Weekend afternoons can see high pressure near the Ranch access points. Arrive early or go downstream.
