Current Conditions

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is running elevated today at 1,210 CFS — well above typical summer tailwater flows of 100–300 CFS — as recorded at the USGS Opal Springs gauge near Culver. This likely reflects increased releases from Prineville Reservoir to meet downstream irrigation demands, a common pattern in late July. The good news: water temperatures are a very fishable 55.6°F (13.1°C), keeping fish comfortable and active throughout the day. The higher flow has pushed some fine sediment into the water column, bumping clarity to slightly off-color — still fishable, but visibility is reduced compared to the gin-clear conditions this stretch is known for.

Wading is significantly more challenging at these flows. The prime tailwater section from Bowman Dam downstream to mile marker 8 (Crooked River Ranch area) is fishable but requires caution. Higher water has fish spread throughout the channel rather than stacked in their typical low-flow lies, which can actually mean more water to target if you read the current properly.

Hatches & Surface Activity

Midges are the dominant food source on the Crooked year-round, and elevated flows haven't changed that. Midge activity ramps up from mid-morning through early afternoon, with fish rising in the slower eddy lines and behind boulders where current breaks create protected feeding lanes. PMDs are still hatching sporadically in the mornings. Caddis are becoming more active as summer progresses — expect evening caddis activity to increase through August. With slightly off-color water, fish are a little less selective, which can work in your favor for getting them to commit to a nymph or streamer.

Top Fly Recommendations

• Zebra Midge (size 20–22, black or red) – the Crooked's bread-and-butter fly; fish it deep on 5X–6X tippet in the slower water
• Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16–18) – excellent all-around nymph for the current PMD activity; fish under an indicator in seams
• Copper John (size 14–16) – at higher flows, heavier nymphs get down fast; red Copper Johns are particularly effective on this river
• Woolly Bugger (size 8–10, olive or black) – elevated flows are prime streamer conditions; strip through runs and swing at the end of drifts for aggressive takes
• Parachute Adams (size 16–18) – useful during sporadic PMD surface activity in the slower morning flats
• Elk Hair Caddis (size 14–16) – fish the evening caddis activity in the slower water near the canyon walls

Best Access Points

• Bowman Dam area: The first 2 miles below the dam offer the most consistent tailwater conditions. Access via Hwy 27 north from Prineville. Flows here are most directly controlled by dam releases.
• Crooked River Ranch / Lower Canyon Road: Multiple pullouts along Lower Canyon Road provide wade access to the prime 8-mile tailwater section. The Crooked River Ranch subdivision offers public access at designated points.
• Cobble Rock area: Good wade access with parking near mile marker 5–6; productive mid-canyon stretch with diverse habitat.

Hazards & Notes

• Elevated flows — use caution wading. At 1,210 CFS the river is significantly above normal summer levels. Wading staff and felt/studded soles are strongly recommended. Do not wade alone.
• Water may be rising or falling — check current USGS gauge conditions before heading out: gauge 14087400 at waterdata.usgs.gov
• Rattlesnakes are active on the hot canyon walls — watch your step when scrambling over rocks to access the water.
• The Crooked is open year-round and does not have a hatchery trout program in this section. Fish are native or wild redband rainbows; handle with care.
