The Crooked River's spring-fed tailwater keeps water temperatures stable and cool throughout the summer — a major advantage over freestone rivers during July heat. The 10-mile Wild and Scenic stretch below Bowman Dam offers classic tailwater fly fishing: deep, wadeable runs, basalt canyon walls, and a surprisingly dense population of wild redband rainbow trout and mountain whitefish.

- Below Bowman Dam — Best accessed via Juniper Canyon Road off HWY 27; fish the first mile below the dam for the highest fish density. Some of the best dry fly action on the river.
- Mile Marker 8–12 Corridor — Prime Wade fishing stretches with consistent populations of 10–16 inch redbands. Less pressure than the popular lower accesses.
