Current Conditions Overview
The Crooked River is in exceptional shape heading into the heart of summer. Flows at the USGS gauge below Opal Springs are running at 1,290 CFS — normal for this time of year, as Opal Springs contributes a significant volume of cold, stable water that keeps the lower canyon cool and clear even during peak summer heat.
Water temperatures are an outstanding 56°F this morning — as close to perfect as it gets for Central Oregon trout fishing. The spring-fed nature of this system insulates the Crooked from the temperature stress affecting other regional rivers right now, and the crystal-clear water rewards careful, long-leader presentations. This is prime time to be on the Crooked.
Hatch Report
July is peak PMD (Pale Morning Dun) month on the Crooked River — and it shows. Hatches are building through mid-morning and continuing into early afternoon, with the slower pools in the upper canyon section seeing the most consistent risers. This is the best dry fly fishing of the year on this river; do not miss it.
- PMDs (Pale Morning Duns): Peak emergence — hatching 10 AM to 2 PM in slower pools and along seam edges, sizes 16–18
- Caddis: Evening caddis activity picking up through late July; fish size 14–16 tan/olive patterns after 6 PM
- Midges: Year-round staple on the Crooked — consistent all-day subsurface action in slow deep pools, sizes 20–22

Dry Flies (Prime Time: Late Morning to Early Afternoon):
- Parachute Adams (sizes 16–18) — The universal PMD stand-in; incredibly effective during mid-morning hatches on slower pools and flats. Fish it in the film with a dead drift and a long, drag-free presentation.
- Elk Hair Caddis (sizes 14–16, tan) — Switch to this in the evening as caddis activity ramps up; also a solid all-day searching pattern on broken water

- Crooked River Ranch (Lower Canyon Road) — Excellent access along the canyon rim with trails dropping to the river; walk-in wade fishing for the most secluded runs and classic canyon pools
- Terrebonne Area (SW Lower Bridge Road) — Accessible pull-offs along the river corridor north of Terrebonne; good evening caddis water with easy wading
- Smith Rock State Park Area — The river bends near Smith Rock offer iconic scenery and productive fishing on the flats below the crags; arrive early on weekends to beat the crowds
- Lower Bridge — Classic wade access at the bridge; long flat stretches with consistent midge and PMD activity all day
Hazards & Closures
- The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is open to fishing year-round. No current emergency closures or flow restriction orders reported.
- Harvest regulations: No harvest of rainbow trout over 20 inches. This is a quality fishery — please handle fish carefully, wet your hands before touching trout, and keep them in the water during release.
- The canyon walls along Lower Canyon Road can be unstable — stay on established trails and avoid scrambling on loose basalt.
- Rattlesnakes are active on canyon rims and sunny rocky areas in July; watch where you step and sit.
