Crooked River Fishing Report – July 23, 2026: Peak PMD Season in the Canyon Below Bowman Dam

The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is reading 1,130 CFS at the USGS gauge below Opal Springs near Culver (site 14087400) as of this morning — running on the higher side of normal summer flows, boosted by cold-water inputs from Opal Springs. Water temperature is an exceptional 56.1°F (13.4°C), courtesy of the year-round cold spring contribution. The river is running clear, with visibility well exceeding two feet throughout the canyon section. The cold, clear conditions make this one of the finest trout fisheries in Central Oregon right now.
What’s Hatching
July is the peak PMD (Pale Morning Dun) month on the Crooked River — and it is delivering. Hatches are building from mid-morning through early afternoon, with the slower, glassy pools in the upper canyon section seeing the most consistent emergences. Spinners fall in the late afternoon and can trigger selective sipping rises in the flat water. Midges remain a year-round staple on this tailwater and are particularly effective early morning and in the evenings when PMD activity slows. Evening caddis hatches have also been observed in the lower canyon near Crooked River Ranch, adding another prime dry fly window after 6 PM. The combination of PMDs, midges, and caddis gives anglers multiple opportunities throughout the day.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Zebra Midge (#18–22, red or black) — The year-round workhorse on the Crooked; dead-drift it under a small indicator in the slower pools and seams.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–18) — Deadly PMD nymph imitation; fish it 12–18 inches below a Zebra Midge dropper in a two-fly nymph rig.
- Parachute Adams (#14–18) — Excellent PMD and general mayfly adult imitation; work the flat glides during mid-morning hatches.
- Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16) — Effective during evening caddis flights in the lower canyon; a reliable attractor all day as well.
- Copper John (#16–18, red) — Gets deep fast in pocket water; bounce it through the faster runs between pool access points.
- Woolly Bugger (#8–10, olive or black) — Strip it through deeper pools and undercut banks to target larger brown trout holding in the heavier current.
Access Points & Best Water
Crooked River Ranch Section: The BLM-managed canyon below Bowman Dam offers the most productive wade fishing. The road paralleling the river from Bowman Dam downstream provides multiple pull-outs and access points. At 1,130 CFS, wading is manageable but requires care — stick to shallower gravel bars and avoid crossing in fast water.
Lower Canyon (toward Terrebonne/Smith Rock): The canyon stretch accessible from Lower Bridge Road offers excellent bank and wade access. The slower pools in this section are prime PMD water during the morning hatch. Smith Rock State Park is nearby for a complete Central Oregon outdoor day.
Bowman Dam Tailout: The first quarter mile below the dam consistently holds fish in the riffles and tailouts. This section benefits most from the cold-water plunge and is worth hitting early.
Regulations & Hazards
The Crooked River is catch-and-release only for trout in the canyon section — artificial lures and flies only; no bait. Check ODFW regulations for current bag limits on whitefish. At 1,130 CFS, wading requires extra caution — studded waders or a wading staff are recommended in any swift sections. Keep an eye on afternoon rattlesnake activity on the sunny south-facing canyon walls. No active closures reported as of this writing.
