Current Conditions
The Crooked River tailwater is performing beautifully this August. With consistent dam-regulated releases, crystal-clear water at a comfortable 56°F, and active PMD hatches firing in the afternoon, this Central Oregon gem is earning its reputation as one of the most fishable rivers in the region right now. While the Deschutes contends with smoke and warming water, the Crooked's shaded basalt canyon and cold tailwater keep conditions near-perfect from Bowman Dam downstream through the prime 8–10 mile fishing corridor.
Flow & Water Quality
The USGS gauge (14087400) below Opal Springs reads 1,190 cfs — this gauge sits downstream of where a large natural spring system (Opal Springs) adds considerable flow to the river below the primary fishing section. The tailwater directly below Bowman Dam through the first 8–10 miles of canyon runs at regulated, wade-friendly flows, confirmed as "perfectly fine" by local shops through late July and early August. Water is gin-clear with excellent visibility down to the river bottom. At 56°F, these temperatures are absolutely ideal for wild redband rainbow trout activity throughout the day.
Hatch Activity
PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) are the story on the Crooked right now. Per local fly shop reports from August 7, hatches are intensifying in the early afternoon and continuing into the early evening, with fish rising confidently to adult duns from around 1–5 PM. Fish the emerger and cripple stage in the surface film just before and during the peak — a sparse tie like a Sparkle Dun or split-case PMD often outperforms the adult imitation. In the mornings, caddis nymphs are producing well throughout the upper canyon — green rockworm-style patterns and generic caddis pupa are both effective. Midges remain the Crooked's all-day backbone and are effective in any seam or riffle from sunup to sundown, especially in sizes 20–24. Scuds in pink, olive, and orange also remain reliable throughout the day.

- Mile Marker 8 (near Terrebonne) — lower end of the prime section; convenient for anglers coming from Bend or Redmond via US-97
Hazards & Closures
No current closures reported on the Crooked River. Regional wildfire smoke may be present but the deep basalt canyon provides some relief. The Crooked River canyon is designated Wild and Scenic by the BLM — pack out all trash and observe no-campfire rules in effect during fire season. Rattlesnakes are active in summer — watch your footing on rocky banks and dry ledges.
