Current Conditions
The Crooked River tailwater is fishing well this week and remains the most fishable river in Central Oregon right now. The USGS gauge (14087400) below Opal Springs is reading 1,200 cfs as of this morning — elevated above recent norms due to Opal Springs' substantial cold spring contributions augmenting flow through the lower reach. Water temperatures are a stellar 56°F (13.2°C), a direct benefit of the cold spring input that keeps this fishery in prime condition even in August heat. Clarity remains excellent; this is a true tailwater with regulation-quality visibility even at higher flows.
Note: The prime fishing section immediately below Bowman Dam (the first 10–12 miles through the Chimney Rock canyon) runs at somewhat lower flows than the Opal Springs gauge reading, as Opal Springs enters the river several miles downstream of the dam. Expect that upper section to be wading-friendly.
Hatches & What's Working
PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) have been the standout hatch, active around midday in sizes 16–18. Sparse, realistic patterns are getting the best results from the selective fish in this clear water. Caddis nymphs and dries have also been productive, with #16–18 tan and olive patterns working well throughout the day. The Crooked's legendary midge hatch continues year-round — it's the insurance policy when nothing else is moving. Scuds in olive and orange are always worth having on as a dropper.
For subsurface fishing, caddis nymphs, PMD nymphs, midges, and scuds have all been finding fish regularly. The tailwater character of this reach means fish are consistent and where you expect them — in seams, along cut banks, and in the shade of canyon walls.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) — Crushes the PMD nymph hatch. Fish it as a dropper under a dry or tight-line through feeding lanes. The single best fly on the Crooked right now.
- Zebra Midge (#20–22) — Reliable any time of day in the flats and slow runs. Fish a two-midge rig in black and red for best results.
- Copper John (#16–18) — Heavy enough to get down quickly in the canyon pockets; the flash draws attention in off-angles light. Effective when PMDs aren't popping.
- Parachute Adams (#16–18) — Covers both PMD and caddis rises in a single fly. High visibility in the canyon's riffled runs, excellent for the midday dry fly window.
- Woolly Bugger (#8–10, olive/black) — Swing it or dead-drift through the deeper green pools near Chimney Rock. A leech imitation can produce some of the biggest fish of the day on this river.
Best Access Points
The Chimney Rock BLM area (off Hwy 27 south of Terrebonne) provides excellent walk-in access to the upper tailwater section with stunning canyon views. Crooked River Ranch residents and their guests have additional private-access stretch options. The BLM-managed Wild and Scenic corridor from Bowman Dam downstream offers roughly 8–10 miles of publicly accessible water — work your way downstream from the dam for the highest fish concentrations.
A valid Oregon fishing license is required. The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release, artificial flies and lures only in the Wild and Scenic reach — verify current regulations at ODFW before fishing.
Hazards & Notes
- No closures currently reported. Flows are elevated — use caution wading through faster runs and test footing carefully on algae-covered basalt.
- Canyon heat builds rapidly by late morning; start early and bring plenty of water.
- This is one of Central Oregon's best kept secrets for August dry fly fishing — the cold spring water keeps temps in the ideal trout range when other rivers are stressed.
