Anglers planning a trip to the Crooked River should check conditions carefully before heading out today. The USGS gauge below Opal Springs near Culver (gauge #14087400) is reading 1,200 CFS as of 5:00 AM PDT — a dramatically elevated figure for this tailwater fishery, which typically runs 80–200 CFS through summer. On the positive side, water temperature is an excellent 55°F (13.0°C), which is near-ideal for rainbow trout and reflects the sustained groundwater influence from Opal Springs. However, the high flow is the primary factor affecting fishability today.
Flow & Conditions
At 1,200 CFS the Crooked River is running well above its typical summer baseline. Wading is extremely difficult and potentially dangerous in most sections — the river is pushing hard through its narrow canyon corridor. Water clarity is expected to be off-color to turbid at these flows, as elevated volume typically kicks up fine silt from the canyon bottom. - Copper John (#12–14, red or bead-head) — drop this heavy attractor nymph into any protected eddy or calmer pocket water you can find. Weight it aggressively to get down fast.

The Terrebonne area provides parking and trail access. Consider hiking downstream into the canyon to find protected pockets and slower water that may be fishable even at current flows.
Hazards & Closures
HIGH WATER CAUTION: At 1,200 CFS, wading is extremely hazardous on the Crooked River. Do not attempt to cross or wade in main-channel currents. The canyon walls in this stretch provide limited retreat options if you get into trouble. Keep children and inexperienced anglers well away from the water's edge.
