Current Conditions

The Crooked River tailwater continues to earn its reputation as Central Oregon's most reliable summer fishery. While wildfires and heat have hampered fishing on other regional rivers, the Crooked's dam-regulated flows and spring-fed temperatures keep conditions stable and comfortable all season long. The USGS gauge below Opal Springs is reading 1,200 CFS — note that the prime tailwater section from Bowman Dam down to approximately Mile Marker 12 sees considerably lower flows, as Opal Springs contributes significant volume further downstream. The tailwater section is perfectly wadeable and fishing has been quite good heading into August.

Water temperature is a crisp 55°F — ideal for wild redband rainbow trout and keeping fish energetic and aggressive throughout the day. Clarity is excellent: the characteristic crystal-clear tailwater visibility demands precise presentations but rewards patient, technical anglers with outstanding dry fly and nymph fishing.

Hatch Activity

The Crooked has been producing a consistent PMD (Pale Morning Dun) hatch around midday — look for rising fish roughly 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM, especially in the flat sections below Crooked River Ranch. PMD spinner falls in the late morning can be particularly productive. Caddis (#16–18) are becoming the dominant evening hatch as August progresses, with activity picking up noticeably in intensity after 5:00 PM. Midges remain the constant — fishing well any time of day, especially in the early morning before the PMDs start. Scuds are a year-round confidence fly in the Crooked's nutrient-rich, spring-influenced waters.

Top Fly Recommendations

For the PMD hatch, a Parachute Adams (#16–18) is an excellent match — the high-visibility parachute post helps you track your fly in the flat, glassy water where sippers can be deceptively hard to target. During the evening caddis hatch, switch to an Elk Hair Caddis (#16–18) and dead-drift through rising fish, or swing it slightly at the end of the drift for an enticing trigger. The Stimulator in smaller sizes (#14–16) bridges the gap nicely between PMD and caddis activity during the afternoon transition.

Below the surface, the Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) is the bread-and-butter pattern — fish it tight-line or under a small indicator through the riffles and runs. The Zebra Midge (#20–22) in red or black is arguably the single most consistent producer on the Crooked year-round; pair it as a dropper below your PMD or caddis dry for a deadly combo. The Copper John (#16–18) in red adds weight and flash to a two-nymph rig and excels in deeper slots and pocket water. On slower days, swing a small Woolly Bugger (#10) through deeper pools — the Crooked holds some surprisingly large brown trout that can't resist a moving streamer.

• Chimney Rock Trailhead — Popular entry point with hike-in access to excellent water below the dam; arrive early for parking
• Crooked River Ranch Day Use Area — Good wade fishing through the ranch section; outstanding for PMD risers in the flat, slow-moving stretches
• Below Bowman Dam — Walk-in from the reservoir road; the first mile below the dam is excellent, particularly in the early morning before other anglers arrive
• Lower Canyon BLM Access Points — Multiple pull-offs along the canyon road provide access to varied runs, riffles, and deeper pools throughout the fishable section

Plan your hatch and fish it deliberately. Get on the water by 8:00 AM with Zebra Midges and Pheasant Tail Nymphs. Transition to PMD dry flies around 10:30 AM and watch the flat sections carefully for subtle risers. Use long, fine leaders — 9–12 feet with 5X or 6X tippet — for the spooky fish in crystal-clear water.
