Crooked River Fishing Report — August 4, 2026: PMDs & Caddis on the Tailwater

Current Conditions
The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is fishing beautifully right now. USGS Gauge 14087400 (below Opal Springs, near Culver) recorded 1,210 cfs this morning — importantly, Opal Springs contributes substantial cold-water volume at that measurement point. The prime fly fishing section from Bowman Dam downstream to approximately Mile Marker 8–12 is running considerably lower, around 200–350 cfs, consistent with recent local shop reports. Water temperature at the gauge reads a cold, trout-perfect 55°F (13.0°C) — the Opal Springs input keeps the Crooked cool and consistent even during August heat.
Hatches & What's Working
The Crooked is arguably the most reliable Central Oregon fishery right now. PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) are hatching midday and fish are keying on them selectively in the slower pools and flat glides. Downsize your tippet to 5X–6X and present a Parachute Adams (#16–18) flush in the film for the best results. Pre-hatch, swing a Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) under a small strike indicator through the seams — this is a consistent producer all day long.
Caddis are active through the afternoons and evenings. An Elk Hair Caddis (#16–18, tan) will draw up fish in the riffles, and smaller caddis nymphs like a Green Rockworm fish well subsurface near rocky runs. The Crooked is a classic tailwater, so midges never stop producing — a Zebra Midge (#20–22, red or black wire) dead-drifted through the slower pools is a go-to any time of day. Run it behind a small scud or Copper John for a killer two-fly combo. For something bigger, a Woolly Bugger (#8–10, olive or tan) stripped slowly through the deeper green pools will draw explosive strikes from the larger wild redband rainbows.
Best Access Points
The prime access corridor follows NE Crooked River Drive (Hwy 27) from Bowman Dam downstream toward Prineville. Key pullouts include the Day Use area just below the dam, Chimney Rock Campground (BLM), and the Lower Palisades access. The 8-mile stretch from the dam to Mile Marker 8 offers the highest fish concentrations — focus on the flats, riffle tails, and cut banks. Wading is easy at current flows, making this an excellent stretch for all skill levels including newer fly fishers.
Hazards & Closures
⚠️ Summer heat: The Crooked River canyon sees extreme afternoon temperatures in August (90°F+). Start early, fish the morning PMD hatch, and plan for a midday break. Carry extra water and wear full sun protection. Rattlesnakes are active on rocky banks — stay aware when scrambling between access points. Smoke from regional fires may drift into the canyon; check air quality before your trip. No current closures on the Crooked River. Reservoir management means flows can fluctuate — verify current conditions via USGS before heading out.
