Current Conditions
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam continues to be one of Central Oregon's most reliable late-summer fisheries, and today is no exception. The USGS gauge below Opal Springs is reading 1,250 CFS — note that Opal Springs cold-water input adds significant volume downstream, so flows in the prime fishing section closest to Bowman Dam (the first 6–8 miles) are considerably more moderate and wader-friendly. Water temperatures are holding at a 55.4°F, a testament to the cold reservoir releases that keep this tailwater fishery thriving through August heat. Clarity is excellent — nearly gin-clear, as is typical for this dam-regulated stretch. The wild redband rainbow and mountain whitefish population in this BLM Wild and Scenic corridor is healthy and actively feeding.
Hatch Activity
August on the Crooked is a midge-and-mayfly show, and today's cool clear water has things looking sharp. Midges are active throughout the day — the foundation of the Crooked's food chain and always worth a spot on your dropper. Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are hatching mid-morning through midday in the calmer flats and runs — look for sipping rises in the flatter water along Crooked River Ranch Road. Trico spinners have been appearing in the early morning hours (7–9 AM), creating a spinner fall that can trigger selective, frustrating, wonderful dry-fly fishing. By evening, Blue-Winged Olives make an appearance when cloud cover or cooler temperatures roll in. The fish here are educated — tippet down to 5X or 6X and use realistic patterns.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Zebra Midge (#20–22, black/red) — fish it all day, always; this is the Crooked's year-round staple; pair it with a bigger nymph on a two-fly rig
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) — dead-drift deep through the runs on a tight-line or indicator setup; the PTN covers PMD and BWO nymph stages beautifully
- Parachute Adams (#16–18) — a versatile surface pattern that imitates emerging PMDs and BWOs; the high-vis parachute post helps you track it in the flat water
- Copper John (#16–18, red) — excellent attractor nymph for the deeper slots and undercut banks; the flash draws fish in low-light conditions
- Woolly Bugger (#8–10, olive/black) — target mountain whitefish holding in the deeper runs, or use a strip-retrieve through the seams below Bowman to move larger rainbows looking for something substantial
Best Access Points
The productive fishing begins immediately below Bowman Dam (Prineville Reservoir outlet) and extends approximately 8–12 miles downstream. Key access areas include the dam parking area and walk-down to the river; Crooked River Ranch Road parallels the river on the north side providing multiple pullout spots; the Lone Pine Bridge area offers excellent wade access and a popular put-in for float tubers; and the Terrebonne area pullouts near the canyon rim. All are BLM-managed with no fee access. No current closures or hazards reported on this section.
Bottom Line
Cold water, clear flows, and willing wild redbands — the Crooked River below Bowman Dam is delivering reliable late-summer action. Go small, go fine, and plan for morning Trico spinners or evening BWOs if you want the dry-fly experience. The midge dropper rig will produce fish all day long regardless.
