Current Conditions
The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is fishing beautifully right now — arguably the most consistent river in Central Oregon this time of year. Water temperatures of 55.6°F (recorded at the Opal Springs gauge early this morning) put this tailwater in a class of its own in mid-August, when warmer rivers start stressing trout. The tailwater section is dam-regulated and running clear as glass. Flows in the prime 10-mile section from Bowman Dam downstream toward Terrebonne are controlled by Prineville Reservoir releases and are holding at fishable wading levels. This Wild and Scenic stretch is in prime shape.
Hatch Report
PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) are the headline hatch right now, firing reliably from late morning into early evening. The most recent shop reports (as of August 7) confirm fish actively rising to PMDs through the afternoon — a Parachute Adams (#16–#18) is your dry fly of choice during the hatch, and a sparse sparkle dun or cripple pattern will fool the fussiest sippers. Caddis are also present and getting stronger as August progresses — reach for an Elk Hair Caddis (#14–#16) in the evenings.
Subsurface fishing is equally productive throughout the day. A Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–#18) or Zebra Midge (#18–#20) dead-drifted through seams and tailouts will consistently produce. A Copper John (#14–#16) adds flash and weight to punch through faster flows. Scuds in pink/olive remain year-round producers on the Crooked — never leave home without them. For those who love swinging streamers, a Woolly Bugger in black or olive moved through deeper runs can connect with the biggest fish in the canyon.
Best Access Points
- Chimney Rock Trailhead (off Lower Bridge Rd, Terrebonne): BLM access to the heart of the tailwater canyon — excellent wade fishing with stunning scenery.
- Crooked River Ranch: Community access points along the canyon rim provide walk-down access to productive riffles and pools.
- Lower Bridge Road corridor: Multiple BLM pullouts offer convenient access to the upper tailwater reaches, closest to Bowman Dam.
Hazards & Notes
The Crooked tailwater canyon has steep, uneven terrain — watch your footing on cliff approaches. Rattlesnakes are common in rocky areas in August. This is a catch-and-release fishery for wild redband trout — check ODFW regulations for current rules. High temperatures on the plateau make early starts smart; thankfully the cold water keeps fish active later into the day than most August rivers. The Crooked is a true gem — protect it.
