River Conditions
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is the most consistently fishable water in Central Oregon right now, and today is no exception. Cold, clear releases from Prineville Reservoir are keeping water temperatures locked in around 55°F — a stark contrast to area rivers baking in August heat. That cold tailwater is a trout magnet, and the wild redband rainbows in this canyon know it.
Flows are elevated at approximately 1,180 CFS as Bureau of Reclamation irrigation season releases continue from Bowman Dam. At these levels the river has good push throughout the canyon, which means fish are tucked into softer water — edges, eddies, the inside of bends, and the calmer water behind larger boulders. Wading anglers should exercise caution and use a wading staff; stick to well-known crossing points and avoid deeper channels. Despite the higher flows, the water is running gin-clear.
The BLM Wild and Scenic corridor from Bowman Dam downstream to Lone Pine Bridge (~12 miles) remains open and accessible. This is a roadless canyon for much of its length — most anglers fish the upper 3–5 miles from the dam, leaving plenty of quiet water for those willing to walk.

- Pale Morning Dun / PMD (#16–18): Moderate and building — per local reports from August 7th, PMDs are showing up in increasing numbers starting early afternoon and continuing into evening. This hatch is getting better by the day.
- Caddis (#16–18): Moderate — caddis have been a consistent presence on the Crooked all summer. Both pupa and adult patterns are producing. The caddis hatch typically overlaps with PMD activity in the afternoon.
- Midge (#20–24): Consistent all day — the Crooked's year-round workhorse. Midges produce morning through evening regardless of other hatch activity.
- Scuds: Always present — the cold tailwater keeps scuds active year-round. An olive or pink scud on the bottom is never a wrong answer here.
- Leeches / Small Streamers: Good throughout — particularly effective early morning and evening, or when dead-drifted through deeper slots.
🎣 Top Fly Recommendations
Morning Strategy (Nymphs First)
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18): Drop one below a Chubby Chernobyl or other indicator in the morning. PMD nymphs are active before the adults emerge — this is your bread-and-butter.
- Zebra Midge (#20–22): Fish it deep on a long tippet. The Crooked's trout have seen every midge pattern — keep it small, keep it natural.
- Copper John (#16–18): Excellent attractor nymph that sinks quickly in higher flows. Red or green both work; bounce it along the bottom in seam water.
- Woolly Bugger (#8–10, black or brown): Dead-drift or swing through deeper pools and undercut banks in the morning for the biggest fish in the system.
Afternoon Dry Fly (The PMD Window)
- Parachute Adams (#16–18): A clean PMD imitation when fish are actively rising in the afternoon. The white post is your friend in this canyon's tricky light.
- Elk Hair Caddis (#16–18): As caddis build through the afternoon, switch to this classic dry in tan or olive. Dead-drift first; skate it if they won't eat on the swing.
- Chubby Chernobyl (#12–14): Use as a top fly with a PMD nymph or Zebra Midge dropper — the Chubby is visible, floats well in the current, and doubles as an attractor dry in its own right.
- Stimulator (#12–14): When PMDs are in the air and fish are looking up, a Stimulator through pocket water near the canyon walls can produce surprising strikes.
⏱ Best Times to Fish Today
- 7:00–11:00 AM: Nymph-focused morning. PMD nymphs, midges, scuds, and Copper Johns all producing in seam water and deeper runs.
- 11:00 AM–1:00 PM: Transition window — first PMD emergers in shaded canyon sections. Watch for subtle risers in slower water.
- 1:00–6:00 PM: Prime dry fly window. PMDs and caddis building, fish actively looking up. Work dry flies or dry-dropper rigs through tailouts and slower runs.
- Evening: Caddis and midge activity continues. Swing leeches or Woolly Buggers through deeper water as light fades.

- Bowman Dam / Reservoir Trailhead: Park near the dam for immediate access to the uppermost (and most productive) stretch. The first mile below the dam consistently holds the highest density of fish.
- Chimney Rock Trailhead (BLM): Off Hwy 27 / Crooked River Hwy — great mid-canyon access with a short hike into quality water with less pressure.
- Lone Pine Bridge: Lower end of the prime Wild and Scenic section (~12 miles from dam). Marks the boundary of the best tailwater fishing.
- Lower Crooked River Ranch area: Some private land — check for public access easements and respect all posted signs.
