Crooked River Fishing Report โ€” May 10, 2026

The Crooked River's tailwater fishery below Bowman Dam is running with spring energy today. The USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver, OR) is reading 1,260 cfs โ€” notably elevated above seasonal baseline as spring runoff works through the system. This gauge sits downstream of the prime trout fishing reach near Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch, where Opal Springs' prolific cold-water input moderates conditions in the upper sections. Water temperature is a comfortable 55ยฐF (12.9ยฐC), ideal for active trout.

Hatch Report

The Crooked is entering one of its finest seasonal windows. Mid-May marks the onset of the river's legendary caddis hatches, and tan and olive caddis are beginning to show in late-afternoon and evening spinner falls โ€” with the best action still a week or so away but building fast. Midges remain the year-round constant here; they're active throughout the day in sizes 18โ€“22. Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis) are emerging during overcast periods and cool mornings, providing additional dry-fly opportunities. Per recent reports from the Crooked River Ranch area, stonefly and caddis activity has been picking up with productive results for anglers working the mid-canyon sections.

Fishing Strategy

For consistent action, nymphing is the go-to. A Zebra Midge (size 18โ€“22, black/red or black/silver) fished under a small indicator or on a tight-line rig is the Crooked's bread-and-butter fly โ€” don't leave the car without a dozen. Pair it with a Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 14โ€“16) as a dropper to cover the Baetis and emerging caddis pupae simultaneously.

If you arrive during a late-afternoon caddis hatch (typically 4โ€“7 PM), tie on an Elk Hair Caddis in tan or olive (size 14โ€“16) and work the slower tailouts and eddy lines โ€” the Crooked's rainbows will come completely unglued. A Parachute Adams (size 14โ€“16) is a reliable all-day searching pattern when fish are visibly rising. For early-morning work in the deeper pools, an olive or black Woolly Bugger (size 8โ€“10) on a slow-swing or stripped retrieve can turn up the canyon's biggest fish.

Best Access Points

  • Crooked River Ranch Road โ€” Multiple pull-offs along NW Crooked River Dr; walk-in access to excellent rifle and pool water
  • Lower Crooked River National Back Country Byway โ€” Scenic canyon road with numerous access points to the catch-and-release section
  • Smith Rock State Park area โ€” North end of the park borders the river; beautiful setting, good wade access at moderate flows
  • Terrebonne area crossings โ€” Several road crossings provide entry points to the mid-canyon reach

Hazards & Notices

Flows are running above normal for this date. Some typical wade crossings in the main current may be difficult or unsafe โ€” stick to inside bends and shallow shelf areas for wading. The canyon walls can be slippery, especially in the early morning shade. The catch-and-release only section (Bowman Dam to the lower boundary) is in full effect โ€” all rainbow trout must be released. No known emergency closures as of today. Carry water; the canyon can get warm on sunny spring afternoons.

Flow data: USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver, OR) โ€” 1,260 cfs as of 5:00 AM PDT, May 10, 2026. Water temp: 12.9ยฐC / 55.6ยฐF. Data provisional, subject to revision. Note: flows in the prime trout water above Opal Springs will be lower than the gauge reading.
