Important: Verify ODFW steelhead regulations before heading out, as a closure was in effect as of mid-August.

The Lower Deschutes is firing on all cylinders for September with flows at 3,860 CFS and water temps at a prime 60°F. Steelhead are moving in excellent numbers as October Caddis begin their emergence alongside trico spinner falls and classic evening caddis hatches. Outstanding swinging conditions for steelhead; don't leave home without an orange Stimulator.
Deschutes River Fishing Report — September 2, 2026: Steelhead Prime Time in the Canyon
September steelhead season is peaking on the lower Deschutes with flows at 3,860 CFS and water temperature at 62.1°F — prime conditions for both swinging flies for chrome steelhead and dry-fly action on resident redband trout. October Caddis are just coming on and the canyon is running clear after a smoky summer.
Lower Deschutes River Fishing Report — September 1, 2026
Flows at 3,860 CFS with crystal-clear water and a 62°F temperature — the lower Deschutes is in prime early-fall shape for trout fishing. Evening caddis flights remain active and October Caddis are beginning to appear, while overcast mornings are triggering Blue-Winged Olive hatches. Important: the lower Deschutes steelhead fishery remains closed effective August 15, 2026.
Lower Deschutes River Fishing Report — August 31, 2026: Evening Caddis Firing, Trout Active
The Lower Deschutes is firing on all cylinders with flows at 3,890 CFS and water temps a comfortable 61°F. Evening caddis hatches are the main event, with fish keyed in hard on Elk Hair Caddis and Stimulators after 7 PM. Clarity is excellent throughout the Maupin corridor and Sherars Falls area — an excellent late-summer day on the water.

The lower Deschutes is fishing well at 3,860 CFS with crystal-clear water and a comfortable 60°F water temperature. Evening caddis hatches are firing in the Maupin corridor — Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator, and Chubby Chernobyl are the top dry fly producers. Watch for wildfire smoke, and keep an eye out for the first early steelhead pushing up from the Columbia.

The lower Deschutes is running 3,860 CFS with crystal-clear water at 62.6°F — evening caddis hatches are the main event from 6–9 PM in the tailouts below Sherars Falls. Hit the Elk Hair Caddis and Stimulator at dusk for some of the best dry-fly action of the season. Smoke in the area — check air quality before heading out.

The lower Deschutes is fishing great at 3,860 cfs with gin-clear water and 64°F temps. The evening caddis hatch is the main event — be on the water from dusk onward with an Elk Hair Caddis. Mornings are producing PMDs and Trico spinner falls in the slow flats above Sherars Falls.

The Lower Deschutes is running 3,860 CFS with crystal-clear 64°F water – excellent late-summer conditions for evening caddis dry fly action near Maupin. Elk Hair Caddis and Chubby Chernobyls are the top picks as caddis flights ignite after 6:30 PM. Good wading conditions with a staff recommended at current flows.

Evening dry fly fishing near Maupin and Mack's Canyon is delivering some of the best action of the season. Note an active BLM fire closure from Warm Springs to Trout Creek.
