Current Conditions

The lower Deschutes is fishing well this weekend despite the wildfire smoke blanketing the canyon. Reports from Maupin confirm thick smoke from fires on multiple sides of the gorge, but the river itself remains open, clear, and actively fishing. Water temperatures measured 64°F early this morning — right at the warm edge of comfortable for wild redband trout. Plan your day around the early morning window (6–10 AM) and the evening (5 PM onward) when temps are lowest and feeding activity peaks. Midday sessions are possible but practice extra-quick catch-and-release when water temps approach 65°F.

Flow & Water Quality

The USGS gauge at Moody (14103000, near Biggs) reads 3,800 cfs as of this morning — a solid mid-summer flow that offers productive wading in the flats and riffles above and below Sherars Falls. Expect thigh-to-waist-deep conditions in the popular runs near Maupin. Clarity is excellent with the classic Deschutes blue-green tint. No turbidity or irrigation-related color issues are present.

Hatch Activity

August on the lower Deschutes means one thing above all: caddis. Evening caddis flights are building toward their late-summer crescendo, with adults clouding the air after 6 PM and fish rising aggressively in the tailouts, along canyon walls, and in every riffle edge. In the mornings, Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are hatching between 8 AM and noon, presenting excellent dry-fly opportunities on a river that rewards technical presentation. Look for sporadic Golden Stonefly activity throughout the day, and watch for early-morning Trico spinner falls in slower flat water above Maupin. With warm afternoons, flying ant patterns can also be deadly when the wind picks up.

• Mack's Canyon Recreation Area — excellent lower-canyon wade access, BLM campground, drift boat take-out, multiple productive runs
• South Junction — lower canyon access ideal for float trips and those chasing steelhead water

Air quality is poor on some days — bring a buff or mask, stay hydrated, and check AQI forecasts before heading out. Verify current BLM river access and fire closures before your trip — fire activity has triggered partial closures in recent weeks and conditions can change rapidly. Call the Prineville BLM office or check recreation.gov for the latest. Warm water advisory: Water at 64°F is approaching catch-and-release stress thresholds — wet your hands before touching fish, keep them in the water, and release quickly.
